The Course

The US Women's Triathlon in Federal Way takes place in and around Steel Lake Park, Federal Way. The Swim is in Steel Lake, the bike is in the rolling country south of Steel Lake and the run is around Steel Lake. The overall Course Map [ view map ] and individual swim, bike and run course maps are now available.

If for any reason you are unable to complete the event, you must report to the timing tent, located at the finish line and turn in your chip. This is mandatory so that we will have a record of all participants for your safety and for the peace of mind for your friends and family.

 
 

The Swim [ view map ]
SuperSprint: 375 meters/.23 miles • Sprint: .75 kilometers/.46 miles)

An in-water start with water treading- The Swim is a triangle course for both SuperSprint (376 meters) and Sprint (750 meters).

The Transition Area
The transition area is a .1-mile run from the swim finish, slightly uphill, mostly on grass.

SuperSprint: 13 kilometers/8 miles • Sprint: 19.5 kilometers/12 miles

The SuperSprint Bike Course
requires cyclists to exit Steel Lake Park, heading east on S. 312th St. to 28th Ave. IMPORTANT: As the race progresses, 28th Avenue will be shared by bikers and runners. The 2 bike lanes (north & south) will be on the east side of 28th, with the runners on the west. The bike and run course will be separated by cones. Cyclists will proceed north on 28th to S. 304th St., then head east to Military Rd. Cyclists will travel south on Military Rd. to S. 320th, then head west to Weyerhaeuser Way. Head south on Weyerhaeuser Way to S. 336th, turn left on 336th, then go left around the loop past the Corporate Headquarters, The Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection, The Rhododendron Botanical Garden and back to Weyerhaeuser Way. Head north to S. 320 (Turnaround for Sprint distance), make a right on S. 320, and a left back onto Military Rd. Continue to S. 304th and make a left, take another left on 28th Ave., a right on S 312th and another right into the park. The course is rolling with a long gradual downhill going out and an uphill coming back on Military.

Sprint Distance Bike Course requires cyclists do a turnaround just before Weyerhaeuser intersects S. 320 and repeat the loop inside the Weyerhaeuser campus. The Sprint distance is just less than 12 miles.

The Run

SuperSprint: 3.4 kilometers/2.1 miles • Sprint: 6.5 kilometers/4 miles

The SuperSprint Run Course exits the Transition Area north into the park and then at .1 miles climb the ZZ Trail (steep but short trail) up to 26th Ave. Runners turn left and then take an immediate right onto 309th St., then an immediate left onto 28th Ave. REMINDER: 28th Avenue will be shared by bikers and runners. The 2 bike lanes (north & south) will be on the east side of 28th, with the runners on the west (left side). The bike and run course will be separated by cones. The course goes counter-clockwise around the lake on 28th Ave, to S. 304th St, Pacific Hwy S. and then onto 308th St, where runners re-enter the park through a gate. There will be directional signs and Course Marshals to direct runners into the finish chute. The course is rolling, except for the steep incline of the ZZ Trail. There will be an aid station at the start and at the one-mile point.

The Sprint Run Course first lap is the same as SuperSprint, but at the bottom of the dirt trail, turn left, run across the promenade above the beach and go up ZZ Trail again to complete another loop of the course, finishing the same as the SuperSprint above. There will be an aid station at the one, two and three mile points.

Note: The course is subject to change and distances are approximate. A final course description will be available at the mandatory course talk on Saturday, September 6th.
